Essential Oils & Animals: What You Need to Know

When we say that essential oils can be enjoyed by the whole family, that includes Bingo and Whiskers. There are just a few things that you need to keep in mind to make sure your fur (or scale, or wool, or feather, or hairless) babies stay safe and enjoy all the benefits Young Living essential oils have to offer.

General Do's

General Do's

Do:

  • Dilute heavily with a carrier oil or water.
  • Start small & use in moderation.
  • Observe how the animal responds.
  • Care for each animal differently.
General Don'ts

General Don'ts

Don’t:

  • Use essential oils near the animal’s eyes, mouth, nose, or sensitive areas.
  • Use hot oils such as Oregano, Clove, Wintergreen & Thyme.
For Cats

For Cats

  • Start with 1 drop of essential oil to 4 parts carrier oil.
  • Avoid citrus oils.
  • Apply to paws.
  • Wear or diffuse near the cat to acclimate them to the oil.
For Dogs

For Dogs

  • Start with 1 – 5 drops of essential oil, depending on the size of the dog.
  • Dilute at least 75%.
  • Avoid using with puppies.
  • Wear or diffuse near the dog to acclimate them to the oil.
  • Do not administer internally.
  • Apply to paws.
For Fish

For Fish

  • Don’t put essential oils in the tank water.
  • Diffuse only around a closed, filtered tank.
For Birds

For Birds

  • Use extreme caution.
  • Dilute oils well.
  • Use a toothpick to measure the essential oil.
  • Don’t diffuse near the bird.
For Reptiles

For Reptiles

  • Don’t diffuse near reptiles.
  • Avoid tree and citrus essential oils.
  • Dilute essential oils with coconut oil.
  • Keep application to a small area.
  • Use a toothpick to measure the essential oil.
For Horses

For Horses

  • Start with 10 drops.
  • Don’t dilute unless otherwise indicated.
  • Place directly under the lip of large animals.
  • Mix with water in a spray bottle for easy application.
